We apologize
Posted Sunday, April 06, 2008, 7:38:29 PM
During the weekend we have received several comments on the ad published in Mexico. We acknowledge the reactions and debate and want to apologize for the concerns this ad caused. We are truly sorry and understand that the ad has offended several persons. This was not our intention. The ad has been withdrawn as of Friday April 4th and will not be used in the future.
In no way was the ad meant to offend or disparage, or advocate an altering of borders, lend support to any anti-American sentiment, or to reflect immigration issues.
To ensure that we avoid future similar mistakes, we are adjusting our internal advertising approval process for ads that are developed in local markets.
This is a genuine and sincere apology,

First of all, I live in Oregon, not Central America. I'm a hard working American, Democrat, but on the conservative end of that party's spectrum. I'm a fan of Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln, FDR, Ron Paul, Michael Savage and Dennis Kucinich. That doesn't mean I support everything all these people support(ed), but I'm open minded. Ultimately, if enough Americans band together to harm Absolut for this ad, I salute you and respect your freedom to act. I can see how you guys can be insulted; I just personally thought it was funny and not worth getting up in arms about. Good luck at the yacht club , Ismay.

If you're only checking in to insult most of the THREE-THOUSAND-SEVEN-HUNDRED-TWENTY-SIX POSTERS, "Coltzin" (maybe that just means "idiot troll" in Spanish...), then "vaya chulo" - BUZZ OFF.
On the other hand, if you have a substantial comment, feel free to make it. Most of us here DO that. But rubbish is (Absolut, you) as rubbish does, so no one here expects more from you.
Should Absolut make an effort to significantly and publically apologize to the United States market for its offensive ad (though few expect such), things may change. It still seems they think their new campaign "style" is just dandy. Until they think otherwise, the vast majority of posters here seem rightly to have chosen to BOYCOTT ABSOLUT and Pernod-Ricard products.

from my last post almost 7 days ago there has been only fifty-.something posts, less than 10 a day. Considering 4 names constantly appear repeatedly, the "outcry" of this so called offensive ad seems pretty pretty low, about as low as the level of IQ of the boycotters.

Come on, "J.'J.'S.", you're no fool. When you write, "To the people who cry 'boycott,' I say: As Americans we need to be stronger than that," you know quite well that a BOYCOTT is a healthy act of flexing one's economic muscles - indeed an aspect of "strength."
Furthermore, I see not an iota of "insecurity" in any aspect of my posts or, for that matter, of those from others in support of a boycott (see for example: Tom from Texas).
On the other hand, I can imagine you, retired and swinging in your hammock as you say you are somewhere in Central America, that you couldn't really give a hoot about what happens to the United States, much less what others around the world, such as Absolut say about it. Sometimes an ad IS MORE than just an ad....
I find your posts just comments from the peanut (or, should I say, banana?!) gallery.

I belong to a Yacht club and to an ELKs club ... we no longer server Absolut vodka in either bar. As a college teacher I believe a company has a vested interest in protecting its brand and I believe that some pin head felt that they would be in alignment with folks who supported the ideology put forth in the ad .... so no more Absolut for me or my influence cohort....

I agree Tony, there's no excuse for this kind of crap. I've been an Absolut drinker for as long as I can remember, but no more. I had always thought this was one cool company, with brilliant marketing ability. They knew better when they stepped over the line. How careless and utterly stupid can you be?

Never again will my family drink Absolut - and I plan on printing up this pathetic ad and making sure others know about it!!! How would Absolut like it if we printed up an ad of Vodka drinkers and replaced Absolut with Grey Goose or Smirnoff?

I'll wager that you've recieved more than "several" comments
on your Mexico ad! To call this a "MISTAKE", is to make an even
bigger mistake.
You underestimate the sentiment in this Country. We tend to
be preoccupied with livin our lives and pay little attention to what
goes on in the rest of the world. When something threatens, we
band together to resist.
I am an entertainer in an area that is visited by tourists from
around the country and the globe. I can tell you that the vast
majority of the folks in this country are 'fed up' with this kind of
'junk'!
Anti-American sentiment is not new: My grandfather was
French-Canadian and served in WWI. He would tell stories of the
contempt for the Dough-Boys displayed by the French and the
English.
I have a huge client base and access to hundreds of people.
I will direct their attention to your 'MISTAKE'. I also intend to put
up a link on my website to this issue.

I don't expect a sincere attitude change on your part, but
I think it would be wise on your part, to adopt a more carefull
approach to your advertising campaigns in the future.

Absolut the let the political cat out of the bag with its advertisement. However, the same cannot be said for its blog. Absolut is not actively debating here; it is only allowing a forum for others to debate, and in some instances pontificate as to the ad. While I don’t agree with some of the posts I think it was a good choice by Absolut to provide a forum for debate. Strangely, I agree with Jack on this issue.

While I disagree with Goose Rider and all the other insecure Americans who can't enjoy a fun ad, I agree with himn here and disagree with you "From PR to PR" on this one. The ad struck a political nerve, and this conversation has been informative and enlightening. If you don't want to participate, get outta here. If you want the conversation to stop, then don't visit this site, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
To the rest, I say: yes the ad was "political" in nature, but it was still just an ad. To the people who cry "boycott," I say: As Americans we need to be stronger than that.
